The Forbidden Land Trekking

The Dayak people live in the lungs of the world. Deep inside the lush rainforests of Kalimantan, Indonesia, on the island of Borneo, they have coexisted in harmony with their forbidden forests or called as Tane Olen for thousands of years.
The Tane Olen of Setulang Village is a tropical rainforest in the upper of Setulang River, Malinau Regency, North Kalimantan which is still natural and preserved. The wilderness area of 5,314 hectares is dominated by Dipterocarp species and has a high diversity of flora. The forest landscape consist rivers, hills, and valleys with a variety of wild fauna such as; clouded leopard, sun bears, gibbons, sambar deer, white-fronted leaf monkeys, hornbills, orangutan, etc.
Tane Olen is a protected forest belongs to the Dayak Kenyah Oma Lung, a sub-tribe of the Dayak Kenyah who lives in the North Kalimantan Province..

Day 01 ARRIVAL IN TARAKAN

Meet at airport and directly transfer to hotel for check in. Next, proceed to mangrove forest to explore proboscis monkeys and birds as well as the species of mangroves. Afterwards, return to hotel for overnight.

Day 02 TARAKAN – MALINAU – SETULANG VILLAGE

Breakfast at hotel then driving to the port for crossing upward the Kayan River to Malinau by public fast boat for about 3 hours of which the fresh water dolphins, proboscis monkeys, and birds emerge occasionally along the delta of Sesayap River. Next, proceed to Setulang village by car for overnight at the homestay. In the afternoon, we can explore the unique culture of Dayak Kenyah people such as longhouse, cemetery, granaries, as well as the long ear women if we are lucky. (B,L,D)

Day 03 SETULANG VILLAGE – CAMP KALONG

After breakfast at the homestay, we will get the four wheel drive car to reach the gate of Tane Olen. We will then trekking up to reach the Camp Kalong of Tane Olen to drop our stuff. Next, take off your shoes to cross the Setulang River and then trekking up through the wilderness to reach big Cifor tree with hope to spot wild animals, such as: monkeys, hornbills, insects, etc. We will then trekking downhill to the waterfall for swimming and having our lunch on the riverside. Afterwards, we will be trekking back to the Camp Kalong for overnight. (B,L,D)

Day 04 CAMP KALONG – CAMP LAGA

Breakfast at the camp and then trekking up and down crossing wilderness to reach the gigantic tree in the top of a hill. In the afternoon, we will trek down to Camp Laga of Tane Olen to set our campsite on the riverside. (B,L,D)

Day 05 CAMP LAGA – CAMP MO’ONG

After breakfast at the campsite, we will be trekking up and down by crossing rivers, rocks, and hills. After lunch at riverside, we will continue the trek with almost the same characteristic until reaching the Camp Mo’ong of Tane Olen to set our campsite on the riverside. (B,L,D)

Day 06 CAMP MO’ONG – SETULANG – MALINAU – TARAKAN

After breakfast, we will trek back to the four wheel drive car for reaching the village. We will then continue driving to the port in Malinau to catch the public fast boat crossing downward the Kayan River to reach Tarakan. Arrive in Tarakan and directly transfer to hotel for overnight. (B,L,D)

Day 07 DEPARTURE

Breakfast at hotel and free at your own leisure till the proper time for transferring to the airport for your flight to the next destination.(B)
